Hoagland Shoots Well In Opening Round

SCARBOROUGH, N.Y. - Ashley Hoagland, a member of the Wake Forest women's golf team, began competition Monday in the U.S. Women's Amateur Qualifier at the 6,190-yard, par 71 Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Also in the hunt is former Wake Forest All-American Marta Prieto.
Hoagland, a rising sophomore for the Demon Deacons out of Palmetto, Fla., carded a four-over-par 75 for the first round. After firing a 39 on the first nine, she improved three strokes on the back nine with a 36.
Prieto, who hails from Sevilla, Spain, finished her career at Wake Forest in 2001. She trails the leader by six strokes after the first round, shooting a 73 yesterday.
Courtney Swaim of Sugar Hill, Ga., is in the lead after the first round of play after firing a four-under-under par 67.
The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The U.S. Women's Amateur is open to female amateur golfers who have USGA handicap indexes not exceeding 5.4.
After two rounds (36 holes) of stroke play, the lowest 64 scorers will advance to match play. The first two rounds of match play, consisting of 18 holes each, is scheduled for Wednesday, with the third round and quarterfinals set for Thursday. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the 36-hole final is set for Saturday.
