Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team opened the season today with a 1-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The game was played at Francis E. Henry stadium at the University of North Carolina as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Challenge also features the Tar Heels the Michigan Wolverines.

The momentum seemed to belong to the Deacons at the outset, but with 22:40 remaining in the first half, Iowa??s Sarah Dawson notched an unassisted tally, giving the Hawkeyes the only goal they would need.

The Demon Deacons dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Iowa, 19-5 and winning the penalty corner battle, 6-4. Wake Forest made a strong charge in the second half, outshooting the Hawkeyes, 12-3 and getting two penalty strokes within a minute of each other early in the period. Still, Iowa goalkeeper Barb Weinberg kept the ball out of the net and the Hawkeyes held on for the 1-0 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Ridd was forced to make just one save in the loss, while Weinberg stopped eight shots.

Action continues on Sunday when the Deacons take on Michigan, the defending national champion, who defeated North Carolina today, 2-0. The game is set for 2:30 p.m.
