The Wake Forest men and women??s cross country teams competed in the annual Wake Forest Alumni Invitational on Saturday, September 14. The women finished first place overall with 16 total points. Jill Miller finished in first place with a time of 17:52.5. Also finishing in the top ten for Wake Forest were Lisa Gibbs and Denise Hefferin.
??We were happy to run at home and I was really pleased with this group. We worked on some team strategies to work together,?? stated women??s coach Annie Bennett. ??The thing is we have depth right now. We have good numbers and we??re competing hard. We want to be one of the best teams in the nation and I think these times are reflecting that.??
First place also belonged to Wake??s men, who finished the race with 23 total points. Mike Altieri was the top Deacon finisher in third with a time of 25:35.60. Jimmy Butler came in fourth with a time of 25:43.30. In eighth place was Dave Barrett with a time of 26:08.70, followed by Brandon Bartholomew in ninth with a time of 26:15.70. Finishing out the top-ten was Brian Smith, who finished with a time of 26:16.20.
??I thought we did a very good job. We set the race up so we had to run it in groups for the first three miles. We??ve been training very hard,?? stated men??s coach Gary Sievers. ??We still aren??t in a racing mode right now because of a long season and we??re getting ready for some other meets right now. It??s exactly what I wanted today and I am pleased with the results.??
The men??s cross country team will travel to Minnesota to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28. The women will head to the Iona Invitational in New York the same weekend.
