Winston-Salem, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated 13th-ranked Duke tonight, 3-0, at a rainy Kentner Stadium. The Deacs improve to 6-2 overall and sit atop the ACC standings at 2-0, while the Blue Devils fall to 6-3 (0-1 ACC). With the victory, the Deacons extend their home winning streak to 18 games.
The Deacons, as they have in all six of their wins this year, scored first. Less than five minutes into the game, freshman Maeke Boreel took a pass from sophomore Kelly Dostal off a penalty corner and found the net. Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the first half and at the break, the scored remained 1-0.
After a brief halftime downpour, the teams returned to the drenched field. It appeared as though the conditions might keep both teams from scoring in the second half, but then, with 8:58 remaining, senior Maria Whitehead found junior Kelly Doton off a penalty corner to make the score 2-0, Wake Forest. Junior Lucy Shaw capped off the win with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Ridd made four saves in the win, while Duke??s Erica Perrier made ten. The Deacons outshot the Blue Devils, 19-6 and had ten penalty corners, to just three for Duke.
??I was really impressed with the pressure that Duke put on us,?? said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. ??Our team, though, showed a lot of character in stepping up and not letting our mistakes get to us.??
The Deacons return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Chapel Hill to take on the 7th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.
