Chapel Hill, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated seventh-ranked North Carolina, 2-1, today at UNC??s Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Deacs improve their record to 7-2 and remain atop the ACC with a 3-0 conference record. The Tar Heels fall to 6-4 (1-1 ACC). The win is Wake??s sixth in a row and fourth in a row over Carolina.

The Tar Heels got the scoring started with 15 minutes remaining in the first half when senior Meredith Keller took a feed off a penalty corner from classmate Stephanie Fuller and scored, giving UNC the 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long, as sophomore Claire Laubach scored off a pass from junior Lucy Shaw less than a minute later. The first half ended with the score knotted at 1-1.

The Deacons took the lead for good in the 50th minute when sophomore Kelly Dostal took Laubach??s pass and found the back of the net for her fourth game-winning goal of the season.

Wake Forest??s Katie Ridd made a season-high nine saves in the win, while Carolina keeper Amy Tran stopped 10 shots. The Deacs outshot the Heels, 14-13. For the first time this year, Wake Forest did not win the penalty corner battle, earning 10 corners to Carolina??s 11.

Wake Forest will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on the Harvard Crimson at 1 p.m.
