Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Down two points with 5.5 seconds remaining, Wake Forest could not get a shot off as time expired, losing to Maryland, 75-73, in ACC women??s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Joel Coliseum Annex.

The chance at a potential game-winning or game-tying shot came after Wake Forest came back from being down seven points with 47 seconds remaining.

With the loss, WFU drops its second straight game and falls to 10-4 overall, 1-3 in conference play. Maryland moves to 8-7, 2-2 in the league.

Wake Forest jumped out to an 8-4 lead, helped out by two three-pointers from freshman Cotelia Bond-Young and senior Heather Miller. But the game was back-and-forth for much of the first half. Although the Deacs led by as many as six points three different times in the first half, it was Maryland who owned a three-point lead, 37-34, at the break.

The second half played out much like the first. Although the Terrapins led most of the way, the margin never got beyond seven points. Bond-Young tied it up, 54-54, for the first time all day with a steal at midcourt and a fast-break layup at the 6:36 mark.

Wake Forest faced its biggest deficit of the game, seven points (71-64), when Bond-Young then hit a three-pointer with 34 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Maryland was called for a five-second violation, turning the ball back over to the Deacs. Wake??s Tonia Brown then hit a three-pointer to pull the Deacs to within one, 71-70, with 29 seconds remaining.

Maryland??s Chrissy Fisher then converted on three of four free throws on the Terps?? next two possessions to give her team a 74-70 lead. With 13 seconds left on the clock, Wake??s Bond-Young then hit another big shot, sinking a three-pointer at the :08 mark to make the score 74-73.

Wake Forest immediately fouled Maryland??s Terri Daniels, and she hit the first of two free throws. The Deacs?? Eafton Hill grabbed the rebound on the missed second attempt, but Wake couldn??t get through the traffic up court to get a shot off before time expired.

For Wake Forest, Hill and senior Tiffani Listenbee each scored a team-high 15 points. Hill also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds while Listenbee grabbed eight. Bond-Young (11 points) and Miller (nine points) each had a trio of three-pointers as the Deacs shot 9-of-24 from beyond the arc (.375). Bond-Young also led WFU with six assists.

Maryland??s Renneika Razor led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She also had a game high five steals. Daniels (15 points) and Delvona Oliver (14) also put up double figures in the winning effort. The Terps?? Chrissy Fisher, who played just six minutes in the first half, had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points.

Next up for the Demon Deacons is a date with top-ranked Duke on Thursday, Jan. 16 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the internet at www.WakeForestSports.com.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
??It was just a great game to watch. Either team could have won it. We had some really good contributions, both from our starters and coming off the bench. It was just a really good hard-fought game. It could have easily gone either way.??

??I have stressed free throws to this team all throughout the year and it really paid off tonight.??

??Wake Forest has a very talented ball club and they are going to do some really good things. But, any time you can get a win in the ACC on the road it??s a good thing.??

Wake Forest Head Coach Charlene Curtis
??We fought back but our defense was not there today. We have to realize that it is a 40 minute game and not quit.??

??We also turned the ball over 23 times which is not like us. A lot of those were due to Maryland??s zone defense.??

??I hope players will continue to step up. That was why I changed the lineup today to reward the players who have been working hard. We cannot become complacent and players who quit working hard because they have been starting have to realize that.??

Cotelia Bond-Young
??The team was focused but we did not do the minor things. We did not value the possession. At the midway point of the season, we still have a chance to be successful in the ACC. We are tired of losing and we have to keep our heads up.??
