Bere Becomes All-Time Leader In Singles Wins

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The ACC Indoors got underway Friday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center and the Demon Deacon men's tennis team had a successful opening day. Four Wake Forest players won advanced to the third round of singles and three of the Demon Deacon doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals. David Bere became Wake Forest's all-time singles leader with a straight set win in the first round, giving the senior his 90th career singles victory, breaking Stefan Dallwitz's 15-year-old school record.
After receiving a first round bye in singles, David Loewenthal made quick work of Florida State's Jeff Groslimond, winning 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. Loewenthal advances to the third round, where he will face Chris Brown from Duke Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Brett Ross shut down Marko Rajavec from Georgia Tech 6-4, 6-0 in the first round and then fought past Duke's Peter Shults 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 (4) in the second round. Ross will take on Stephen Nolan of Virginia at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the third round.
Mike Murray got a first round bye and then defeated Heiner Tadault from Florida State 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 in the second round. Murray will face Fabio Campos from Georgia Tech at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in the third round.
David Bere took little time in beating Chris Mills of NC State, winning 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and then dismantled Jonathan Janda from North Carolina 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Bere will take on Duke's Ludovic Walter in the third round Saturday at noon.
Derrick Spice smoked Dillon Walker from Virginia 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, but then stumbled in the second round, falling 6-4, 7-6 (11) to Florida State's Chip Webb. Spice will play Trevor McLeod from Georgia Tech at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the consolation bracket. Trent Brendon received a first round bye and then lost 6-4, 6-3 in the second round to Stephen Nolen from Virginia. Brendon receives a first round bye in consolation play and will take on the winner of the Travis Triplett (UVA) vs. Andy Metzler (UNC) match at 12:30 Saturday. Andrew Simpson rallied to beat Jirov Nakajima from NC State 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before falling 6-2, 6-2 to Joao Menano from Georgia Tech in the second round. Simpson will take on Nick Methaler from Virginia in consolation play Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
Mirko Ivanda fell 6-2, 6-1 to West Nott from Georgia Tech in the first round and will take on Jeff Groslimond from Florida State in the first round of consolation play 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Brian Murphy dropped 6-0, 6-3 to Duke's Chris Brown in the first round and moves into the consolation bracket where he will play Dillon Walker of Virginia 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the first round.
In doubles action Ross and Spice defeated the NC State pair, Jon Davis and Jirov Nakajima, 8-2 in the first round and then beat Duke's Stephen Amritraj and Peter Shults 8-6 in the second round. The Deacon duo faces Joao Menano and Marko Rajavec from Georgia Tech at 3:30 Saturday in the quarterfinals. Brendon and Loewenthal received a first round bye and then topped Rylan Rizza and Doug Stewart from Virginia 8-5 in the second round. The Wake Forest pair advances to the quarterfinals where they meet another Wake Forest pair, Bere and Murphy, who advanced to the quarterfinals with two walkovers due to illness.
Mike Murray won the family feud when he and doubles partner Simpson beat younger brother RJ Murray and NC State partner Val Banada 8-3 in the first round. The Deacon twosome lost 8-4 to Florida State's Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd in the second round.
