CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest sophomore Sarah Kozey scored a pair of second half goals, but #3 Virginia rallied from one-goal deficits twice after halftime as the Cavaliers and Demon Deacons tied, 2-2, in ACC women's soccer action from Kl?ckner Stadium Saturday night. With the tie, Wake Forest stands at 9-2-2 (0-1-1 ACC), while Virginia is 10-1-2 (2-0-1 ACC).
After a scoreless first half, Kozey gave Wake Forest the lead with an unassisted goal at 65:03. The midfielder took a rebound out of the box and from 20 yards out fired a shot into the net. The goal was the fourth of the season for Kozey.
Virginia would counter nine minutes later as Sarah Lane sent a cross that was flicked on by Lindsay Gusick to Shannon Foley. Foley took one dribble then blasted the ball into the far side of the net to tie the game.
The game would be deadlocked for just three minutes as Kozey made a run down the right side, received a pass from Lindsey Griffin and sent a low shot that hit the far post and went in. The two goal game was the first for Kozey since October 30 of last season when she picked up a pair against North Carolina.
The Cavaliers rallied again and tied the game in the 89th minute when Gillian Hatch took a corner kick that was headed by Becky Sauerbrunn off the far post and as the rebound settled on the goal line, Lane tapped the ball in for the equalizer.
In overtime, the Cavaliers used the momentum of the tying goal to create several chances, but the Wake defense stood firm and the game ended in the 2-2 draw.
Wake Forest returns to action this Tuesday night, October 14, at the #1 Tar Heels. Kickoff with North Carolina is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with the Deacs, 16-0-1.
