DURHAM, N.C. - Chris Barclay ran for a career-high 163 yards and three first-half touchdowns as Wake Forest beat Duke 42-13 Saturday, handing the Blue Devils their 29th straight ACC loss.
The Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-2) rebounded from a 24-7 loss to Georgia Tech - their worst scoring output in Jim Grobe's first 30 games - by scoring six touchdowns in the opening half.
The 42 points were the most scored in a half by Wake Forest since getting 50 in the first half against Virginia in October 1975.
Wake Forest played a nearly perfect half without a turnover or penalty, and going 6-for-7 on third-down conversions.
And with a 42-point lead, Barclay didn't see the field in the second half as Grobe substituted liberally.
Wake Forest did almost all of its damage on the ground, running the ball 56 of 60 plays while piling up a season-high 256 yards.
Meanwhile, Duke (2-5, 0-4) has lost four in a row after a 2-1 start as coach Carl Franks fell to 7-45 in his fifth season.
The Blue Devils avoided a shutout when Dan Schneider scored on a 2-yard keeper with nine seconds left in the third quarter. But the Duke quarterback hurt his left shoulder on a scramble with 9:58 left and didn't return.
Barclay, slowed early in the season with an ankle injury, almost bested his 124 yards from last Saturday in the opening 16? minutes. He picked up 71 yards on Wake Forest's first drive, capped by his 12-yard run, and went over the 100-yard mark early in the second quarter.
He added scoring runs of 1 and 47 yards and had 163 by the break on 22 carries.
The defensive hero was linebacker Kellen Brantley, who didn't record a tackle last week against the Yellow Jackets in his 30th straight start.
The senior was active Saturday, forcing a fumble on Duke's second possession that helped set up Barclay's second TD.
Brantley also returned an interception 64 yards to give the Demon Deacons a 28-0 lead and batted down a fourth-down pass at the Wake Forest 25 late in the half as Duke was trying to get on the board.
Cory Randolph threw just four first-half passes, but his 44-yard completion to Jason Anderson set up Nick Burney's 5-yard TD run.
Duke's last ACC win came against Wake Forest in November 1999.
