WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The Wake Forest volleyball team had its three-match winning streak snapped after suffering a 3-0 loss to Duke on Saturday afternoon in Reynolds Gymnasium. An enthusiastic crowd was on hand to cheer on the Demon Deacons, but the Blue Devils were too much to handle. Duke improves to 5-7 in the ACC while Wake Forest falls to 7-5.
Wake Forest hit just .101 as a team compared to Duke's .283 mark. Katie Gilman of the Blue Devils led all players with 13 kills and also added 12 digs in the match. The Deacs were led by Lauren Peterson who recorded 12 kills in a losing effort. Duke also outblocked Wake Forest, 10-5 in the match.
Game one was a seesaw battle in which the score was tied seven different times. Wake Forest had a 20-18 lead, but two Demon Deacon attack errors coupled with two Duke kills gave the Blue Devils a lead which they would hold on to. Duke continued to play strong and took the first game by a score of 30-25.
The Blue Devils wasted no time putting Wake Forest in a 2-0 hole, as they won game two, 30-17. The Demon Deacons hit just .023 in the game while Duke hit a match-high .400.
The Deacs found themselves down early on in game three, but fought back to tie the score at 21. Consecutive kills by Peterson and Valerie Rydberg followed by a Duke error and Rydberg ace put Wake Forest ahead 25-21. But Duke scored six unanswered points to grab a 27-25 lead. A kill by Duke's Gilman on the final point of the match gave the Blue Devils a 30-27 win.
The Demon Deacons return to action when they travel to Clemson for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday evening.
