CLEMSON, S.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Clemson on Tuesday evening in Jervey Gym. With this win, the Demon Deacons improve to 8-5 in the ACC and 19-7 overall while the Tigers fall to 4-9 and 15-14.

Valerie Rydberg led the way for Wake Forest, hitting .327 with 21 kills and 12 digs. Christy Williams contributed with 14 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and eight block assists while Kim Stern recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Jessica Hauff, Sara Beth DeLisle, Erin Borhart and Katy de Roeck also played great matches for the Deacs.

Wake Forest took game one by a score of 30-23. Rydberg had seven kills in the game, followed by Williams and Hauff who each had five as the team hit .381. Trailing 4-3 early on, the Deacs put together a streak of six consecutive points which included two kills by Hauff to give Wake Forest a 9-4 advantage. Clemson then went on a run, cutting the Demon Deacons' lead to one at 15-14. With the score tied 17-17, Wake Forest put away eight kills in the next ten points to regain a 25-19 lead they would not give up.

Game two was a back-and-forth battle with the Tigers coming out on top by a score of 30-24. Wake Forest led 13-10 but two attack errors and a Clemson kill brought the Tigers even at 13. The score was again tied at 14 and 15, but Clemson then began to pull away for good. Kills by Clemson's Lori Ashton on two of the game's final five points allowed the Tigers to even the match at one game apiece.

Clemson looked to have control of game three with a 20-13 lead. But Wake Forest went on a 10-2 run to get within a point of the Tigers' advantage. A Clemson attack error evened the score at 24, and a Wake Forest block gave the Deacs their first lead since early in the game. The Tigers came back and took a 28-27 lead, but three consecutive kills by Sara Beth DeLisle, Williams and Stern gave the Demon Deacons a dramatic come-from-behind win.

A decisive 30-18 victory for the Deacs in game four finished off Clemson and ended the match. Rydberg and Stern combined for 11 kills in the game while Wake Forest hit .385 as a team.

The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Georgia Tech for a 2 p.m. match against the Yellow Jackets.
