WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The North Carolina women and NC State men took home the 2003 ACC Cross Country titles Saturday morning at Wake Forest University. This is the Tar Heels' third women's cross country championship overall and first since 1999. With their win in the men's division, the Wolfpack has now won eight of the last nine ACC championships. Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina and Andy Smith of NC State were the individual champions.

The 13th ranked Wake Forest women placed third overall with 62 points in Saturday's 6k race, finishing behind North Carolina and NC State. The Demon Deacons had two finishers in the top ten, including Anna Sherman who placed seventh and Michelle Sikes who came in ninth overall. This top ten finish earned Sherman and Sikes each a spot on the 2003 ACC All-Conference Team. Sikes was also the first freshman to cross the finish line which earned her ACC Freshman of the Year honors. Four other Wake Forest women placed in the top 25. Annie Bersagel finished 11th, Hanna Bremler 15th, Erin Franklin 20th and Selina Sekulic 23rd. Lisa Gibbs and Catherine Fortin-Major also placed in the top 50 for the Demon Deacons.

The Demon Deacon men wrapped up the day with a fifth place finish overall in their 8k race. Sean Stevens continued his strong season, finishing seventh overall and earning a spot on the 2003 All-Conference Team. Dave Barrett and Brandon Bartholomew also placed in the top 30 overall for Wake Forest. Chris Elder, Nathan Sisco, Brad Wharton and Chris Catton also competed for the Deacs and finished in the top 60.

The Demon Deacons returns to action on November 15th when they travel to Greenville, N.C. for the NCAA Southeast Regional.
