WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Tonia Brown paced five players in double figures as Wake Forest hammered North Carolina A&T, 87-29, in women's college basketball action from Joel Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The 29 points were the fewest allowed by the Demon Deacons since 1990-91.
The Deacs (4-3) wasted little time flexing its muscle on the Lady Aggies (1-5). Wake Forest scored the game's first 12 points and jumped out to a 15-2 lead at the 14:19 mark. Tonia Brown poured in seven of the Deacs' first 15 points.
Wake Forest pushed the lead to 24 points, 35-11, with 1:59 left in the opening 20 minutes and eventually took a 37-14 lead into halftime.
The Deacs really pulled away at the start of the second half. Wake Forest opened the second half on a 23-2 run, including 15 consecutive points. The Demon Deacons' lead grew to as many as 59, 79-20, with 6:10 left in regulation.
The victory snapped the Demon Deacons three game losing streak.
Brown scored her game high 16 points in only 19 minutes of action. The guard went 5-for-7 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Brown also grabbed three rebounds, dished out four assists and registered two steals.
Liz Strunk poured in 14 points, her fifth double figure game on the season. Strunk went 6-for-11 from the floor. The sophomore collected six rebounds and dished out a season-high tying three assists.
Bianca Brown and Cotelia Bond-Young each added 12 points. Bianca Brown, making her first start of the season at shooting guard, connected on her first 3-point field goal attempt and finished 3-for-5 from the field, including a pair from behind the 3-point line. Bianca Brown also recorded a season-high four steals.
Erin Ferrell was the final Demon Deacon in double figures. The junior forward chipped in 11 points.
Wake Forest limited NC A&T to just 21.2% (11-for-52), including 16.1% (5-for-31) in the second half. The Deacs have now limited five of their seven opponents this season under 40 percent shooting. In fact, Loyola and NC A&T could not manage 30 percent.
The 29 points allowed is not only season best, but nearly eclipsed the school record. The school record for fewest points allowed in a single game is 21 set on Feb. 10, 1972 when the Deacs defeated Guilford, 55-21. Wake Forest last held an opponent under 30 points on Nov. 26, 1990 in a 90-29 rout of Morgan State. The 58 point margin of victory is the largest winning margin since that same game.
The Demon Deacons return to action Monday morning for "Middle School Day." Tipoff with Florida A&M is scheduled for 11:00 am.
