Men's Tennis Fights Off #69 Old Dominion, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 23rd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over No. 69 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Monarchs won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, but the Demon Deacons won four of six singles matches to earn the victory.

The Demon Deacons' top doubles team, David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, nearly upset the fourth-ranked pair from Old Dominion, Zoltan Csandadi and Izak van der Merwe, falling 9-8 (4) in a tiebreaker. Derrick Spice and Brett Ross both turned in successful days, as the two paired up to win the No. 2 doubles match 8-6 and then each proceeded to earn straight set victories in singles.

Spice dispatched Patrik Binkowski 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Ross won the match-deciding match 6-3, 6-4 over Niklas Oskarsson at No. 6. Loewenthal and David Bere both won their singles matches in straight sets as well.

Wake Forest improves to 2-0 on the season with the win and Old Dominion falls to 4-1 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they host No. 55 William & Mary on Friday, Feb. 7 at 5:00 p.m. and No. 53 Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 9 at noon in the Indoor Tennis Center.
