Winston-Salem, N.C. - The seventh-ranked Wake Forest baseball team upended West Virginia 10-2 on a cold, damp Saturday afternoon at Hooks Stadium to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Brian Bach, a Winston-Salem native and Mount Tabor High School graduate, went seven innings for the victory. He allowed just two runs, scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked just two. Bach pitched out trouble early, stranding runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings. He also received big help from his infield which turned three double plays in the first four innings including a pair of unassisted double plays by third baseman Jamie D'Antona.
Wake Forest led 2-1 after three innings and pulled away with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by Steve LeFaivre's two-out, two-run single to center. The Deacons gradually extended the lead with runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth to provide Bach and reliever Daniel Davidson with plenty of cushion.
The Wake Forest offensive effort was greatly aided by 14 walks, three passed balls and three errors at key moments by the Mountaineers, who were playing their first game of the year. West Virginia starter Jason D'Angelo allowed just one hit in three innings with four strikeouts but issued five bases on balls.
Adam Bourassa and Ryan Johnson each walked three times. Jamie D'Antona, Chris Getz and Brad Scioletti walked twice.
Sophomore Daniel Davidson was sharp in relief, fanning three in two innings of work.
After a Friday rainout, the Deacons and Moutaineers planned on a Saturday doubleheader but the teams decided to cancel game two because of cold weather conditions and a steady light rain that began to fall in the latter stages of the first game. Sunday's contest has been cancelled as well.
Wake Forest returns to action at Davidson on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. West Virginia travels to Wilmington, N.C., next weekend to play UNC Wilmington and Fordham.
