No. 51 Minnesota Slips Past Wake Forest, 4-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team lost 4-3 to No. 51 Minnesota Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers won two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead and then split the six singles matches to capture the 4-3 victory. Katie Martzolf led the Demon Deacon effort, winning at both singles and doubles.
Martzolf teamed up with Danielle Schwartz to beat Minnesota's Angela Buergis and Michaela Havelkova 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Martzolf then took out No. 119 Valerie Vladea 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Wake Forest's Aimee Smith and Sandie Knight both picked up straight set victories in singles as Smith defeated Nischela Reddy 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Knight topped Brandi Watts 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. Havelkova won the deciding match for Minnesota with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Danielle Schwartz at No. 3.
The Demon Deacons kept it close, taking the Golden Gophers to three sets before losing at No. 1, 3 and 4 singles.
Wake Forest falls to 1-6 with the loss and Minnesota improves to 5-2 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, Feb. 23, when they host No. 12 William & Mary at noon. Minnesota and William & Mary will play each other on Saturday, Feb. 22 starting at 10:00 a.m. in the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
