The Wake Forest women??s golf team will kick off the spring schedule starting this weekend in Humacao, Puerto Rico. The Deacons will compete in a two-day 54-hole event starting Friday and ending Saturday. The tournament, which will be held at the Palmas del Mar Country Club, consists of 36 holes on Friday and the final 18 on Saturday. The par 72 course measures 6,000 yards.
Competing for Wake Forest will be senior All-American and All-ACC candidate Nuria Clau, senior Maria Beautell, junior Deborah Means, and sophomores Ashley Hoagland and Christine Hallstrom.
Clau is coming off a solid fall campaign where she won her first collegiate tournament at the Landfall Tradition en route to a 73.92 stroke average and two other top-10 finishes. Clau also competed in the World Cup for the Spanish team, finishing 21st individually and third as a team.
Fellow senior and Spaniard, Maria Beautell, looks to continue her success in her final spring season. In the fall, Beautell counted all nine of her rounds to the team scoring and placed fourth on the team in stroke average.
Junior Deborah Means returns to the starting lineup after a wrist injury which kept her out of the final fall tournament in Wilmington. Means hurt her wrist in the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational, yet still shot a 73 playing the final nine holes in severe pain. She has completely rehabilitated her wrist and looks to continue contributing to the starting lineup this spring.
Sophomores Ashley Hoagland and Christine Hallstrom both played key roles in the fall and should continue to improve their play for the Deacons.
After the trip to Puerto Rico, the Deacs will compete in the Lady Gamecock Classic on March 14-16 in Columbia, S.C. Then Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro will co-host the sixth annual Bryan National Collegiate to be held at Bryan Park Champions Course from March 28-30 in Browns Summit, N.C., a suburb of Greensboro. The Deacons will round out the spring in Athens, Ga., where they will compete in the Liz Murphy Collegiate hosted by the University of Georgia, April 4-6.
On April 19-21, Wake Forest will join the rest of the ACC in nearby Clemmons, N.C., for the ACC Tournament at Salem Glen Country Club. This year Wake Forest will host the NCAA East Regional for the first time at Salem Glen.
??We don??t have our own golf course,?? said head coach Dianne Dailey, ??so we??ve never been able to host anything here in Winston-Salem. This is the first time that we??re hosting a big time event, so we??re excited about it.??
The top eight qualifiers from the East Regional will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the NCAA Championship at the Kampen Course on the Purdue University Campus. Last year the Deacs returned to the NCAA Championship after a one-year hiatus and finished in 22nd.
This spring should be another exciting season for the Dailey??s Deacs who continue to add on to the growing tradition that is Wake Forest golf.
