WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated No. 50 Michigan 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead and then swept singles play to finish off the Wolverines 7-0.
Mike Murray clinched the victory for Wake Forest with a straight set victory at No. 3 singles, beating Chris Shaya 6-3, 6-2. Murray and doubles partner Andrew Simpson took Michigan's Anthony Jackson and Josef Fischer to down to the wire at No. 3 doubles before falling 9-8 (5) in a tiebreaker. The doubles point had already been secured for the Demon Deacons however, as David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon won the No. 1 match 8-5 and Derrick Spice and Brett Ross took the No. 2 match 9-8 (5).
Loewenthal, Spice and David Bere all picked up straight set victories in singles, while Brendon and Ross won in super tiebreakers. Loewenthal, Spice and Bere all improve their dual singles records to 4-0 on the season.
Wake Forest improves to 4-0 on the season with the win and Michigan falls to 3-4 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they travel to Richmond, Va., to take on No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:00 p.m. and No. 11 Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2:00 p.m.
