TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's golf team recorded their fourth straight top-five finish, placing second at the Seminole Intercollegiate at Golden Eagle Country Club (par 72, 6,847 yards). The Demon Deacons turned in three consecutive rounds under par (286-283-286, 855) to finish six strokes back of team champion North Carolina (849).
The 15-team field, which featured four ACC squads (host Florida State and Virginia in addition to WFU and UNC) started off Tuesday's action by finishing up the second round of play, which was halted due to darkness on Monday. The teams then headed back out for the final 18 holes. Wake Forest, which was fourth after one round, moved up to third after 36 holes and trailed second-place South Carolina by three strokes entering the final round. The Deacs turned in a two-under 286 while the Gamecocks posted one of the higher rounds of the day - a four-over 292 - to switch places with WFU in the final standings.
Five teams and 12 individuals finished under par for the tournament. The Deacons were led individually by junior Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) and senior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.), who tied for third with a six-under 210. For Wanner, it tied his career-best 54-hole score. Haas recorded rounds of 68-72-70, while Wanner turned in scores of 71-69-70. The Deacon duo finished five strokes back of individual medalist Dustin Bray of North Carolina, who carded a pair of 67s en route to an 11-under 205.
Wake Forest freshman Kyle Reifers (Dublin, Ohio) posted an impressive finish, tying for 20th with a two-over 218 (75-70-73). It is the second top-20 finish in four events played this season for the rookie.
Senior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) recovered from a first-round 78, carding a 72 and 73 over the final 36 to finish tied for 43rd with a +7 223. Another senior, Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.), tied for 52nd with a nine-over 225 (72-75-78).
The Demon Deacons, ranked fifth nationally, return to action March 22-23 at The Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
