D'Antona Named ACC Player of the Week

Greensboro, NC -- Wake Forest third baseman Jamie D'Antona garners this week's ACC Player of the Week honors after batting .556 (15 for 27) over five games last week. The junior from Trumbull, Conn., had three or more RBI in four of the Demon Deacons five games.
D'Antona had the game-winning RBI versus conference foe Maryland in the 13th inning on Sunday, a two-run, two-out single. He also had the game-tying RBI and scored the game-winning run against the Terrapins in the 9th inning on Friday. On the week, the third baseman tallied six doubles, one homer and 15 RBI.
D'Antona is making a major statement in his junior season hitting .434 (33-of-76) through 18 games with 11 doubles, 5 HR, 37 RBI, 13 walks and just seven strikeouts. Six of D'Antona's 11 RBI vs. Maryland came with two outs. He was 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position in College Park and passed former teammate Corey Slavik for 4th place on Wake Forest's all-time RBI chart (197). He could reach 200 career RBI this week and would become the 23rd player in ACC history to reach that level.
Sterry led the Wolfpack to a 5-0 week with his two wins over The Citadel (4-3) and Princeton (8-2). The right-hander from Rowland Heights, Calif., worked 7.1 innings versus The Citadel, striking out ten batters and walking only two. The junior pitched a complete game seven-hitter against Princeton, extending NC State's streak to 13 consecutive wins. Versus the Tigers, Sterry struck out a career-high 14 batters, which was the fourth time in six starts that he has reached double figure strikeouts. Sterry is 5-0 this season with a 2.38 ERA over six appearances and has allowed 30 hits, walked 10 and struck out 57.
Davidson went 1-0 for the week with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances. The senior lefty struck out 12 batters, allowing just three hits and no walks in 10.1 innings of work. The Panama City, Fla., product did not allow a runner past second base in 10.1 innings last week and held his opponents to a .094 hitting percentage. Davidson is 2-0 this season (0.47 ERA) with 26 strikeouts and four walks in 19.0 innings pitched.
