Women's Tennis Surrenders 5-2 At #25 Illinois

URBANA, Ill. - The 50th-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by No. 25 Illinois Sunday afternoon at the University of Illinois Atkins Tennis Center. The Fighting Illini won two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0 and then took four of six singles matches to finish off the Demon Deacons 5-2. Aimee Smith led the effort for Wake Forest, winning at both singles and doubles.
Wake Forest switched up its doubles lineup for the first time all season as Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz played up at No. 1 doubles while Smith and Karin Coetzee played down at No. 2 doubles. Coetzee and Smith earned an 8-3 victory over Illinois' Eldina Fazlic and Eva Choe.
Playing at No. 3 singles, her highest level of competition this season, Smith defeated Fazlic in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7-5. Martzolf picked up her second straight singles win, outlasting the Illini's 121st-ranked singles player, Tiffany Elklov, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Wake Forest falls to 1-10 with the loss and Illinois improves to 7-3 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they return home to host No. 22 Clemson in the ACC and outdoor opener on Saturday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Leighton Stadium, followed by Old Dominion on Sunday, March 9 at noon.
