WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 28th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated Maryland 7-0 Monday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. The Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and then swept all six singles matches in straight sets to finish off the Terrapins 7-0, earning WFU its first ACC win of the season. Mike Murray led Wake Forest with shutout wins in singles and doubles. The senior from Clearwater, Fla., moves into sole possession of third place on the school's all-time singles wins list with his 90th career victory.
Murray teamed with Trent Brendon to blank Maryland's Troy Demers and Pierre Rudder 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and then dispatched David Reichsfeld 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. David Loewenthal and Brett Ross picked up the 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles over Terrapins Chris Chiu and Greg Chambers. Loewenthal won 6-1, 6-2 over Chiu at No. 1 singles and Ross took out Scott Peters 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 for the deciding match. Brendon beat Rudder 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, David Bere stopped Demers 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Brian Murphy triumphed over Rory Theis 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
Wake Forest improves to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC with the win and Maryland falls to 8-6, 0-3 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday, March 24, when they travel to Durham, N.C. to take on No. 9 Duke before making their way to Atlanta on Sunday to play No. 24 Georgia Tech.
