DURHAM, N.C. - The 32nd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team lost 4-3 Wednesday afternoon to No. 11 Duke. The Blue Devils won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and then split the six singles matches with the Demon Deacons to hang on for the victory. Rain began to fall just as singles play began, moving the match from Ambler Stadium to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Brett Ross led the effort for Wake Forest, winning at both singles and doubles.
Ross, a true freshman from Roswell, Ga., teamed up with David Loewenthal to defeat Duke's Ludovic Walter & Jason Zimmermann, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and then beat Yorke Allen, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 5-4 (ret.) at No. 6 singles.
Derrick Spice defeated Zimmermann 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 3 singles and Mike Murray beat Peter Shults 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 5. Trent Brendon and David Bere both took their Blue Devil opponents to three sets before falling.
Wake Forest falls to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the ACC with the loss and Duke improves to 10-5, 2-0 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, March 30, when they travel to Atlanta to play No. 14 Georgia Tech.
