ATLANTA - The 32nd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team, playing without top player David Loewenthal, upset No. 14 Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead and then split the six singles matches with the Yellow Jackets to secure a 4-3 victory. Trent Brendon and Brett Ross led Wake Forest with wins at singles and doubles.
Ross teamed up with Derrick Spice to upset Georgia Tech's 19th-ranked tandem Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg 9-8 (4) at No. 1 doubles and then he beat Marko Rajevac in straight sets at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 7-5. Brendon and doubles partner Mike Murray took out Rajevac and Joao Menano 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and then Brendon worked over Menano 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Loewenthal is out with a high ankle sprain sustained midway through singles play at Duke on March 26.
Brian Murphy won the deciding match for Wake Forest, defeating Trevor McLeod 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Spice, playing No. 1 singles for just the second time all season, took 26th-ranked Anderson to three sets before falling, as did Murray and David Bere with their Yellow Jacket opponents.
Wake Forest improves to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC with the win and Georgia Tech falls to 11-5, 3-3 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action on Wednesday, April 2, when they return home to host No. 37 North Carolina at 4:30 p.m. in Leighton Stadium.
