Duke Leads After First Round Of Bryan National

Browns Summit, N.C. - The Duke Blue Devils shot a two-under (286), Friday, in the first round of the sixth annual Bryan National Collegiate held in Browns Summit, N.C. Duke leads South Carolina by eight strokes.
The 54-hole event co-hosted by Wake Forest and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro began Friday and ends on Sunday. The tournament is contested at Bryan Park Champions Course. The course measures 6,064 yards and par is 72.
Duke's Kristina Engstrom and South Carolina's Kristy McPherson lead all players after shooting first rounds 69, 3-under par. The two lead Jessica Shepley, of Tennessee, by one stroke.
Wake Forest senior Maria Beautell led the Deacons with a first round score of 73, one-over par, good for a tenth place tie. Sophomore Ashley Hoagland added a two-over 74, and is in a tie for 16th. Senior Nuria Clau added a 75 (three-over par), and junior Deborah Means also shot a three-over 75. Sophomore Christine Hallstrom shot a nine-over par 81 for the Deacons
Duke leads one of the nation's strongest fields in this year's event. 16th-ranked South Carolina is eight strokes back. Wake Forest is in third with a 297 tied with Tulsa. Auburn, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee are all in a tie for fifth with a 10-over par 298. Georgia is in eighth with a 300. North Carolina is ninth (303), followed by Florida State (304), Purdue (306), and Louisville in 12th place after an opening round 307. NC State stands in 13th after a 311, Furman is in 14th with a 313 total, and LSU is 15th with a 314. The field is rounded out with Mississippi State in 16th after a first round 315, Memphis is 17th (324), and UNC Greensboro is 18th with a 329 total.
