Cross Country Earns Academic Honors

Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest women's cross country team earned All-Academic honors from the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) for NCAA Division I cross country. Demon Deacons Anne Bersagel, Risa Rutland and Anna Sherman were selected as Academic All-Americans by the USTCA.
The combined grade point average of the Wake Forest women's cross country team for the 2002 fall semester was 3.23 and teams needed a 3.0 to qualify for the All-Academic team honor.
Individuals that placed in the top 15 of their NCAA regional meet or are an NCAA All-American for the most recent NCAA Cross Country Championships in addition to having at least a 3.25 GPA qualify for USTCA Academic All-America honors.
Bersagel, a sophomore Political Science major from Greeley, CO, finished her fall semester with a 3.94 GPA. During the 2002 cross country season, Bersagel was named to the All-ACC and Southeast All-Regional teams. She led the Demon Deacons to a ninth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships, while earning All-America status with an individual performance of 25th place.
Rutland, Wake Forest's only three-time all-regional selection, held a 3.73 GPA during the 2002 fall semester. The Houston, TX, native placed eighth at the 2002 ACC Championships, earning All-ACC honors, 13th at the 2002 Southeast Regionals, earning all-regional honors and 64th at the 2002 NCAA Championships while helping the Demon Deacons to their best finish in the program's history. Rutland was recently honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference as a 2003 Scholar Athlete.
Sherman, who hails from West Essex, NJ, also received all-regional honors with an 11th-place finish at the 2002 Southeast Regionals. She placed 12th at the 2002 ACC Cross Country Championships and 72nd at the 2002 NCAA Championships. The business major finished the fall semester with a 3.65 GPA.
