Winston-Salem, N.C. -- Behind a complete game effort from Brian Bach and four hits from Adam Bourassa, the 22nd-ranked Wake Forest baseball team captured a 10-3 victory over visiting Davidson on Thursday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
The Deacons (23-12) took the lead for good when Ryder Mathias led off the third inning with a home run, his first of the year. Mathias, who started just two of the team's first 32 games while recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, made his third straight start behind the dish.
Davidson (13-19) opened the scoring in the first inning. The Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out but Bach coaxed Erskine Wells into a double play. A run scored but Bach avoided the big inning.
The Deacons responded immediately in the first when Bourassa stole second and third base before scoring on Ryan Johnson's sacrifice fly to the center field wall.
After Mathias' home run, Wake Forest added two more runs in the third thanks to consecutive singles by Bourassa, Ryan Hubbard and Johnson and an RBI groundout by Jamie D'Antona.
Davidson sliced the Deacon lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning but Wake Forest batted around in the seventh and received RBI singles from Mathias, Bourassa and Hubbard to pull away, taking a 10-5 lead.
Bach (5-1) retired the Wildcats in order only twice but limited Davidson to just one extra base hit. It was his second career complete game and the third by the Wake Forest pitching staff this season. Bach allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and five walks to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Offensively, the Deacons were led by Bourassa's four hits. The senior leadoff hitter also stole three bases in the game. Hubbard and Mathias had two hits apiece while Ben Ingold and Johnson both had a pair of RBI.
The Deacons hit the road on Thursday night to travel to Atlanta. Wake Forest will begin a three-game series with ACC-leading Georgia Tech beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. That game will be televised on Fox Sports South. All three games this weekend can be heard on 98.1 FM WBRF.
