Outdoor Track Completes Day One of ACC Championships

Raleigh, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's outdoor track & field teams completed the first day of the 2003 ACC Championships on Friday at the Paul Derr Track on the NC State campus in Raleigh, NC. The Demon Deacon women are tied for seventh place with a team score of 11 heading into tomorrow's competition, while the men stand in eighth place with 12 points.
Kara Mullin came in fourth the 3,000M Steeplechase with a season-best 10:51.30, while Catherine Fortin-Major placed fifth with a 10:53.58. Cassy Richards jumped a 19-0 for seventh place in the Long Jump and Lindsay Neuberger threw a 141-04 for 10th in the Discus.
David Barrett finished eighth in the 3,000M Steeplechase with a time of 9:19.07 and Chris Elder ran a 9:32.85 for 11th place. In the Shot Put, Tom Tymann took sixth with a toss of 52-6.75 and Josh Carter threw a 43-7.25 for 12th place. Luke Orman came in 13th with a mark of 21-0 in the Long Jump and Adam Gabrault finished seventh in the Hammer Throw with a 156-05. Demon Deacons placing in the Javelin include Michael Hauck in sixth and Zach Hamilton in 10th.
Nikeya Green led the Deacs that qualified for Saturday's finals, running a 2:07.41 in the 800M for first place. Anna Sherman and Shauna Danos also advanced in the 800M with sixth and ninth place finishes, respectively. Anna Sherman took fourth to qualify in the 1,500M with a time of 4:28.80.
Wake Forest men qualifying for the final day include Mike Altieri, with a sixth place finish in the 800M and a fifth place finish in the 1,500M and Brad Wharton in the 1,500M.
Jill Kovalcik stands in sixth place with 2789 points in the Heptathlon after Day One and Michael Eskind is in fourth in the Decathlon with 3489 points.
Leading the women's competition is North Carolina with 107 points, while Florida State tallied 74 points to pace the men. The ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will continue on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and conclude with the women's 4 x 400M Relay at 5:40 p.m.
