WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz upset the nation's 10th-ranked doubles team, Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams, 8-4 Wednesday afternoon in the Wake Forest women's tennis team's 7-0 loss to No. 5 Duke at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. Playing without the services of Aimee Smith, who is out with an injury, the Demon Deacons were left with only five bodies and had to default No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. It was Wake Forest's final home match of the season.
Karin Coetzee and Sandie Knight teamed up at No. 2 doubles to give Duke's 60th-ranked Katie Granson and Julia Smith a run for the doubles point, but came up short, falling 8-6. Down 2-0 going into singles play, the Demon Deacons were unable to hold off the Blue Devils, falling in straight sets at every match but No. 4 where Sandie Knight took Hillard Adams to three sets before dropping a supertiebreaker.
Wake Forest drops to 3-19 overall and 1-5 in the ACC with the loss and Duke improves to 21-2, 6-0 with the win. The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend when they travel north to take on No. 32 Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., and Maryland at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday in College Park, Md.
