David Loewenthal, Wake Forest's top player on the men's tennis team, was selected as an alternate by the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Committee Thursday for the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship May 19-24 in Athens, Ga. Loewenthal, a junior from Franklin Lakes, N.J., is the No. 2 alternate and will compete in the 64-player event if more than one participant drops out or is unable to play.
Loewenthal is ranked 56th in the latest Omni Hotels/ITA Singles Rankings and has an overall singles record of 31-16 this year.
A two-time All-ACC selection, Loewenthal participated last year in the NCAA Singles Championship. Last year he defeated Divan Coetzee from New Mexico 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2 in the first round and lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round to top-seeded, top-ranked and eventual national champion Matias Boeker from Georgia. Loewenthal was Boeker's only opponent to take him to three sets during the NCAA Singles Championship.
Loewenthal is also trying to lead Wake Forest past the first round of the NCAA team tournament for the first time in school history. He has led the Demon Deacons to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and they take on #46 Brown in the first round Saturday, May 10 at Duke's Ambler Tennis Stadium.
