Men's Golf Tied For Fifth at NCAA Regional

AUBURN, Ala. - The Wake Forest men's golf team is currently in a tie for fifth place afer the opening 18 holes of the NCAA East Regional, taking place at the Auburn University Club (par 72, 7,207 yards).
Wake Forest shot a two-over 290 as a team to tie with Florida and Augusta State for fifth among the 27-team field. The top 10 teams after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. May 27-30. Tennessee and Georgia Tech finished the day tied for first with a seven-under 281. Clemson is third at three-under, while Duke sits in fourth at -2 for the day.
Deacon senior Brent Wanner led the WFU contingent on Thursday, shooting a one-under 71. Wanner was three under going into the final two holes, but bogeyed both 17 and 18. He currently sits in 18th place. He is four strokes back of two players who currently lead the field with a five-under 67 - Gareth Maybin of South Alabama and Ross McGowan of Tennessee.
Junior Bill Haas turned in an even 72 in the opening round to finish the day in 24th place. Senior Chris Yoder is one stroke back, sitting in 34th with a 73, while senior Cortland Lowe carded a two-over 74 to end the day in 45th place. Senior Chad Wilfong opened the day with a double-bogey on No. 1 and never seemed to get on track, finishing with a six-over 78. He is currently in 101st place.
The second round of the NCAA East Regional takes place on Friday. The Deacons, paired with Clemson and Augusta State, will tee off beginning at 7:12 a.m. (CST). Real-time scoring updates are available at www.golfstatlive.com.
