NCAA EAST REGIONAL QUOTES
FIRST ROUND
South Carolina's Kristy McPherson, co-first round leader * 68 (-3)
On her performance:
"I hit the ball well. I didn't have a great back (nine). I had a good birdie opportunity on every hole, between 14 and 16 feet. It helped to birdie the last two holes coming in."
On the performance on the entire South Carolina team:
"I think we just made a lot of mental mistakes today. We just need to eliminate some of the mistakes, myself included. We need to keep bogeys from turning into doubles. But we're still right there. We just need to play it one shot at a time."
Furman's Brandi Jackson, the co-first round leader * 68(-3)
On her performance:
"It was pretty consistent, I had one bogey and four birdies. It is nothing out of the ordinary. I putted ok."
On being co-leader after the first round:
"It feels pretty good. I struggled with my driver in the practice round yesterday, so I worked on that."
On course condition:
"It was dryer than yesterday. Yesterday was really wet. It played a little bit shorter than it did yesterday. The greens are in really good condition - they are rolling really good."
On preparation for tomorrow:
"No, just do the same thing. Luckily we get to play in the morning. It is kind of tough being out there later in the day."
Duke Coach Dan Brooks, Duke is the first round leader * 288 (+4)
On his team's opening round:
"I saw a lot of good golf today. I can only see a certain amount because we have five players but the parts that I saw were really good. Coming off finals (exams), we haven't competed since the ACC (Championship) and this is a very important tournament, so everyone was a bit jittery. It was a nice to get at least a decent round in the first round.
On returning to the site of the ACC Championship:
"It always helps to see a golf course. The more you see it, the better. That's a positive. I think there are things you learn as you play a course time after time that you don't even realize. You just know not to go there and the places to go to get the best shot. It's a plus."
On the course layout:
"Honestly, I would like to see a course that's a little longer. I think a longer course separates (the teams). You're looking for separation in a regional tournament. That's why majors are on tough courses and it's the same principle."
On getting his team ready for competition:
"There's no gearing up. I don't think anybody ever gets tired of winning. In fact, you develop a taste for it. The more you win, the more you want to win. I think one of my jobs is to try to keep standards high. Sometimes I do talk about making sure we play up to a standard that we set. Don't have the standard be set by anybody else. We set our own standard and we play to that."
