WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The fourth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team opened the 2003 exhibition schedule with a 2-0 victory against Charlotte on Monday night at Spry Stadium.
Both Demon Deacon goals were scored in the first half. In the 39th minute, freshman Ryan Solle blasted a shot from 20 yards out. Charlotte goalkeeper Lucas Mackanos made the initial stop but couldn't contain the rebound. Senior Vicente Bastidas followed and tapped it in for a 1-0 Wake Forest lead.
Moments before halftime, in the 43rd minute, Justin Moose sent a through ball behind the Charlotte defense. Tomy Szczypiorski ran onto it first and tucked into the far post for the game's final score.
Wake Forest outshot Charlotte 11-7 and put seven shots on goal compared to Charlotte's one. The game was a physical contest, particularly for a first exhibition. A total of 30 fouls were called, 17 on Charlotte and 13 on Wake Forest.
Senior goalkeeper William Hesmer did not need to make a save for the shutout. However, he did receive help from defender Kelvin Jones in the 42nd minute. Charlotte's Scott Raber headed a ball through traffic that was cleared off the line by Jones.
Wake Forest got a look an almost everyone on the roster as 25 players saw action in the contest, including freshmen Chris Bastidas, Robert Davis, Mark Ellington, Ryan Solle, Wells Thompson and David Worthen.
The Deacons will host one final exhibition game on Saturday, August 23 against Coastal Carolina. The game will be part of a soccer doubleheader at Spry Stadium. The women's team plays Virginia Tech at 4:30 p.m. before the men's game begins at 7:00 p.m.
