Durham, N.C. - The #1 Wake Forest field hockey team defeated 5th ranked Duke Saturday by a score of 3-1. The win today extends the team's winning streak to 23 consecutive wins, and 11 in a row over ACC regular season opponents.
The Demon Deacons (4-0, 1-0 ACC) fell behind early to the Blue Devils (4-1, 0-1 ACC) when Chrissie Murphy scored 14:25 into the first half.
However, the Deacons responded at the 19 minute mark when Lucy Shaw registered her first goal on the season, unassisted. Each team only took one shot on goal in the opening frame, and both capitalized.
The Deacs came out of halftime fired up and controlled the second half, outshooting the Devils 7-2. Junior All-American Kelly Dostal put the Deacons ahead when she connected with senior Kelly Doton for her fourth goal on the year three minutes into the second half.
WFU kept the pressure on, as Doton recorded her second assist of the day and fifth on the season when she set up senior Katie Ackerman 53 minutes into the game to give the Deacons a 3-1 advantage. Ackerman's goal was her third on the year.
For the game, the Deacons outshot the Blue Devils 8-3, and had an 11-1 penalty corner advantage.
"I am extremely proud of our girls," said head coach Jennifer Averill. "It was a well fought game. In the first half, we didn't play to well, but in the second we definitely changed the momentum. I am really excited for the girls. It was a great win for Wake hockey."
Wake Forest will host Kent State Sunday at 1 pm in Kentner Stadium. The Deacons hold a 4-1 edge in the all-time series with the Golden Flashes.
