Winston-Salem, N.C. - The top-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Kent State by a score of 4-0 on Sunday. The win extends the team's winning streak to 24 consecutive wins. It also marked the Demon Deacons' fifth consecutive shutout at Kentner Stadium.
The Deacons (5-0) struck first when senior Katie Ackerman scored on a rebound from a penalty corner 12:46 into the action. It marked the fourth score on the season for Ackerman.
Sophomore Maeke Boreel pushed the Deacon lead to 2-0 when she scored from eight yards at the 20 minute mark. The unassisted goal was Boreel's second on the season.
Wake Forest dominated the statistics in the first half, outshooting Kent State 30-1 and holding an 11-1 penalty corner advantage. Yet 22 saves by Flashes' goalie Jessica Creeden kept the Deacon lead at two through the first half.
In the second half, the Deacs extended the lead to 3-0 when Emily Ruth scored on a pass from Kelly Dostal, her third goal on the year. The Deacons added their final goal 68 minutes into the game when Kelly Doton capitalized on a fast break from five yards out scoring her first goal of the year on a feed from Tracey Scott.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Ridd recorded her third shutout on the year, the 21st for her career.
Wake Forest finished the game with a 39-1 shot advantage and 23-1 advantage on penalty corners.
"It was a win," said head coach Jennifer Averill. "We had moments, but we need to pick up our execution. We had some lulls out there. We didn't play up to our ability, and I'd like for us to pick it up sooner rather than later."
The Deacons will host VCU on September 21 and eighth-ranked Michigan State on September 22. Both games will be played at 1 pm at Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus.
