Field Hockey Hosts VCU, Michigan State This Weekend

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The #1 Wake Forest field hockey team returns to action this weekend when the Demon Deacons host Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday and Michigan State on Sunday. Both games will be played at Kentner Stadium at 1 pm.
Last time out...
The Deacs defeated Kent State 4-0 at home on last Sunday. The Deacons took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game when senior Katie Ackerman scored on a rebound. The Deacs added to the first half lead when sophomore Maeke Boreel registered her second goal of the season 20 minutes into the game. The Deacs dominated Kent State statistically in the first half outshooting the Golden Flashes 30-1 and holding an 11-0 penalty corner advantage. In the second half, the Deacs tallied two more goals, one each from Emily Ruth and Kelly Doton.
ACC Action...
Last weekend, the Deacons opened up ACC play with a big win over fifth-ranked Duke. The Deacs fell behind early in the game but rallied to win 3-1. Lucy Shaw tied the game at the 19 minute mark and the two teams remained tied until the half. In the second half, the Deacs turned up the intensity outshooting the Blue Devils 7-2, with junior Kelly Dostal putting the Deacons ahead 53 minutes into the game. Senior Katie Ackerman pushed the lead to two with a goal late in the game. The victory marked the 11th consecutive win over an ACC regular season foe.
The Deacons will resume ACC play on Friday, September 26, against second-ranked North Carolina at 4 pm in Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus.
Series Notes...
The Demon Deacons are riding a 24-game winning streak...WFU holds a 7-5-1 edge in the all-time series with the Rams, including seven in a row since 1994...Wake Forest beat VCU in the last meeting in Richmond by a score of 7-0.
Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Michigan State 2-1...the last meeting between the Spartans and the Demon Deacons came in 2002 as the Deacs blanked Michigan State 3-0 in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship...the Deacons lone defeat came in 2001, losing 2-0 at the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
