Sept. 24, 2003
The nation's two top-ranked field hockey teams -- No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 2 North Carolina -- will collide Friday at 4 p.m. at WFU's Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest, 7-0, has allowed just three goals all season and outscored its last three opponents by a combined margin of 17-0. The Demon Deacons, the defending NCAA champions, have not lost a game in more than a year (Sept. 8, 2002) -- a streak of 26 consecutive victories.
The Deacons have been balanced in 2003 with 10 different players scoring at least one goal. All-American candidates Kelly Dostal (8 goals, 18 points) and Kelly Doton (8 assists, 14 points) have led the way.
North Carolina, 8-0, has been equally dominant this fall. The Tar Heels have outscored opponents 50-4 so far this season, including a 10-0 win over Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.
Friday's game is the beginning of a difficult stretch for Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons travel to No. 3-ranked Maryland on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
