DURHAM, N.C.- - The Wake Forest volleyball team played its second five-game match in a row on Tuesday night in Durham, but this time the Demon Deacons came out on top with a 3-2 win over Duke. After a tough loss to Maryland on Saturday evening, the Deacs rallied from a two games to one deficit to take down the Blue Devils. Wake Forest improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC while Duke fell to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Valerie Rydberg again had a tremendous match for the Demon Deacons, putting away 20 kills and coming up with 26 digs. With this performance, Rydberg surpassed both the 500 kill and 500 dig mark in her career at Wake Forest.
Sophomore Erin Borhart set a new career-high in assists for the third consecutive match, recording 71 over the five games in this match against the Blue Devils. Borhart also recorded 14 digs for the Deacs. Christy Williams and Jessica Hauff both had a hitting percentage of well over .300 over the course of the match and combined for 35 kills and 11 block assists. Duke had four players with double-digit kills, led by Katie Gilman who had 20.
Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage thanks to a 30-26 win in game one. The Blue Devils took advantage of seven Wake Forest errors and took command early. But the Demon Deacons stormed right back with a nail-biting 31-29 victory in game two. Both teams hit under .200 in the game, but the Deacs squeaked by with a win to pull even. After another 30-26 Duke win in game three, Wake Forest found themselves down 2-1 but dominated game four and won by a score of 30-18. The Deacs committed just four errors in the game while hitting .382. Wake Forest had gathered up enough momentum and kept rolling through the fifth and final game with a 15-11 victory. The Demon Deacons had ten kills and just two errors while the Blue Devils hit just .038 in the deciding contest.
The Deacs have a few days off before heading south to Tallahassee where they will take on Florida State on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
