Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest field hockey team extended its winning streak to 22 games as the Demon Deacons beat James Madison by a 6-0 margin. The Deacons stand 3-0 on this year's campaign while the Dukes drop to 0-4 on the season.
In a sluggish first half, the Deacons scored 4:52 into the contest when senior Katie Ackerman notched her first goal on the season. Junior Kelly Dostal fed Ackerman to give the Deacs an early lead.
Wake Forest then added to the lead with a Claire Laubach goal at the 13:56 mark, her first goal on the season. The Deacs outshot the Dukes by an 11-0 margin in the half.
In the second half, the Deacons turned up the pressure and pushed on the offensive attack, outshooting James Madison 16-1. Ackerman connected on a Maeke Boreel pass to give her a second goal on the afternoon putting the Deacons up 3-0 with 32 minutes left to play.
Senior Emily Ruth tallied back-to-back goals, both assisted by Kelly Doton in a three minute span to extend the lead to five. Laubach capped off the afternoon, scoring on a penalty corner with no time remaining in the game to give the Deacons a 6-0 victory.
"In the first half, we did not stick with the game plan," head coach Jennifer Averill said, "but in the second half we made some adjustments and settled down. We had a much better tempo and execution. Overall the second half was a much better performance."
Wake Forest will travel to Duke next Saturday before hosting Kent State on next Sunday at 1 pm at Kentner Stadium.
