Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team fell to Duke, 1-3 (30-27, 25-30, 27-30, 22-30) in Reynolds Gymnasium Tuesday night. The loss was the seventh straight for the Deacons, who fall to 8-9 (0-7 in the ACC). Duke improves to 14-5 (5-3 in the ACC).
In game one, Duke gained the early 4-1 lead, but a Blue Devil service error, an out of bounds hit and a block by Morgan Havig and Jenna Doane knotted the score at four. The Deacons took their first lead at 6-5 but would not build on it until they went up 17-15 after a kill by Doane and two out of bounds shots by Duke. The Deacons would serve three more unanswered points to take the 20-15 lead, forcing Duke to call the game's first time out.
Duke came out of the talk on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 22, but Wake Forest would not back down. Kim Stern slammed one past the Blue Devils to regain the one point advantage. Duke tied things again before Valerie Rydberg regained the lead with her second kill of the game. The Blue Devils went on a 3-1 run but Havig crushed one down the side to tie the game at 26. Lauren Peterson would not be denied as she planted one in the back court to clinch game one for the Deacons, 30-27.
Wake Forest claimed the first point of game two and the teams would swap for the one point lead until Duke tossed up four unanswered points for the 8-5 lead. Deacon head coach Valorie Baker called her first time out of the match. Peterson offered her fourth kill of the match to halt the Blue Devils scoring streak. Duke answered with two more points before the Deacons could put up a pair of the own. Duke then extended their lead to seven and Baker called another time out, trailing 8-15. Wake Forest cut the lead to two before Duke got back on the board, 18-15. Duke would regain a seven point lead but would only take game two, 30-25.
Duke opened game three on a 3-0 run before Stern put the Deacons on the board with her eighth kill of the match. Three kills by Havig kept the Deacons within one. A block by Christy Williams and an attack by Doane gave the Deacons their first lead of the game, 10-9. Wake would extend their lead to two, three times, but trailing 19-20, Baker called a time out. Duke gained their largest lead of the game (four) three times, but the Deacons fought back. Trailing 22-26, they went on a 3-2 run, bringing the score to 25-28. Baker called another time out. Duke would go on to take game three, 30-27.
Game four started much the same way game two did, with the Deacons claiming the first point and the teams swapping for the lead until Duke went on a 5-0 run for the 6-2 lead.
