Richmond, Va. - The No.1-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team hung on to beat Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0 Saturday night. Senior Kelly Dostal scored the only goal of the game, her 21st this season. Wake Forest improves to 13-2 on the season, while VCU falls to 8-7.

Virginia Commonwealth held the Deacons to just seven shots in the first half, the first of which did not come until 17:51 left in the first half. Lauren Crandall claimed the first offensive play for the Deacons, as the first half of the opening period was dominated by the Rams.

With 13:26 left in the half, the Deacons took their first penalty corner of the game. Claire Laubach injected to stopper Maeke Boreel. Crandall faked a swing and Kelly Dostal stepped up for her 21st goal of the season to give the Deacons the 1-0 lead. Boreel was credited with her team-best 13th assist of the season

The Deacons had three more penalty corner opportunities and took five more shots but headed into the break with only a one goal advantage.

In second half action, Dostal immediately drove down the field and earned the Deacons a penalty corner, their fifth of the evening. The Rams answered, driving downfield and continuing their offensive pressure.

Wake Forest gained control of the game and took 13 second half shots and 10 penalty corners before VCU's Ashley Cadwallader was yellow carded. The Deacons were unable to capitalize on the one woman advantage, but the Rams took two penalty corners in that time.

The Deacons outshot the Rams 23-5 and took 16 penalty corners to the Rams' three.

The Deacons return home for the final home game of the regular season, to host Radford, Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
