Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No.1 Wake Forest field hockey team beat the visiting Radford Highlanders, 9-0 on Wednesday night. Senior Kelly Dostal scored three goals and added one assist en route to etching her name at the top of the Deacon record books for career goals and points. The Deacons improve to 14-2 while Radford falls to 5-9.
"I was very pleased with the entire team and their effort," said associate head coach Neil Macmillan. "We were able to play everyone and move them into different positions and I thought our finishing was brilliant."
Dostal got the Deacons on the board early, just 1:38 into the game. Kelly Wood set Dostal up for her 22nd goal of the season.
Moments later, Dostal slipped one to Tamar Meijer to give the Deacons the 2-0 edge. Meijer, second on the team in scoring, tallied her first goal in four games. She now has 15 goals on the season, good for a fifth place standing in the ACC.
Kristi Harshman dribbled through several Highlanders and found Meijer with 25:30 left in the first half. Meijer slid the ball to Dostal who put it in to give the Deacs a three goal cushion. The goal was the 23rd of the season for the All-American senior, and the 77th of her career. She is now the all-time leading goals scorer in Wake Forest history, claiming the title from 2000 graduate, Jenny Everett.
Lauren Crandall would score the final Deacon goal of the first half. She penetrated the Highlander defense and connected on her fifth goal of the season. Wake Forest headed into the break with the 4-0 lead.
The Deacons out-shot the Highlanders, 11-0 in the first half and took five penalty corners to Radford's zero.
Harshman found Meijer to open second half scoring. Harshman was credited with her fifth assist of the season, her first of the game. Tonight's game marked the fifth in Meijer's career in which she has scored multiple goals.
With 24:07 left in the game, Claire Laubach injected to Maeke Boreel on the seventh Deacon penalty corner of the night. Boreel found Dostal who found her third goal of the game. With seven points on the evening, Dostal now moves into first place for all-time Deacon career points.
"What an honor for Dostal," said Macmillan. "She has been a great part of the program for the past four years and her name now stands in the record books to show how valuable she is to the Deacon offense."
Freshman Rachel Thomas tallied her first career points when she assisted Boreel on the seventh Deacon goal of the game.
The Highlanders had their first look at a potential shot but Deacon junior Ariel Meyers snubbed all hope by stealing the ball and driving downfield.
Wake Forest took two more corners and found goal number eight of the game. Laubach injected to stopper Thomas, who found Crandall for the fourth goal of the second half.
Just minutes later, Chelsea Cipriani passed to Laubach for the ninth and final goal of the game.
Wake Forest allowed no shots by the Highlanders and took 24 of their own. The Deacons took 10 penalty corners. All Deacon field players and goalkeepers played in the sixth Deacon shutout of the season.
The Deacons travel to No.16 Virginia on Sunday for their final game of the regular season. The match will also be the fourth and final regular season ACC game for the Deacons. Game time with the Cavaliers is set for 1 p.m.
