Charlottesville, Va. - The No.1-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated ACC rival No. 16 Virginia, 3-2 on Sunday. Maeke Boreel, Tamar Meijer and Kelly Dostal scored for the Deacons. With the win, the Wake finishes the regular season, 15-2, 2-2 in the ACC. Virginia falls to 10-8, 0-3 in the ACC.

The Deacons jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead. Meijer found Boreel for the junior's fourth goal of the season. Meijer would give the Deacons the 2-0 edge with her 17th goal of the season. Claire Laubach injected to Boreel who chipped to Dostal for the third and final Deacon goal of the game.

Dostal's 24th goal this season, coupled with her 15 assists, gives her 63 points in 2004, which ties the Deacon record for most points in a season, set by Dostal last year. She now stands at the top of the Deacon record books in career points and goals and in season points.

The Cavaliers made a comeback with two unanswered goals but the Deacons held on to win their seventh straight against Virginia. Wake Forest inches closer in the all-time series with Virginia, but the Cavaliers still lead 14-8.

North Carolina clinched the regular season ACC title with a 2-1 overtime win against Maryland on Saturday. The Tar Heels went a perfect 4-0 in ACC regular season action and will therefore be the No.1 seed in the ACC Tournament next month. Maryland went 2-2 in the ACC this season as did the Deacons. Duke is 1-2 in ACC games, while Virginia is 0-3. The Blue Devils and the Cavaliers play Oct. 30 in Durham. The outcome of that game will determine the remaining seeds for the ACC Tournament.

The Deacons enjoy nearly two weeks of rest before the ACC Tournament begins. The Nov. 4-7 event will be held at the home of the Deacons, in Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest. Admission is free to all games that weekend. A play-in game between seeds four and five will be played Thursday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. Seeds two and three face off Friday at 4 p.m. followed by game three between the Tar Heels and the winner of the play-in game, at 7 p.m. The Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. will be televised.
