WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Klarysa Henry, Michael Faulkner and Emily Nedderman all posted career-highs for the Demon Deacons, but it wasn't enough as the Wake Forest volleyball team fell in five games to non-conference opponent, Winthrop (30-24, 26-30, 30-26, 28-30, 11-15). The Deacs fall to 8-11 overall, while the Eagles improve to 19-2.

A kill by Christy Williams and another by Nedderman pushed the Deacs far enough ahead and closed the game, 30-24.
In the second game, the Eagles came out fighting, taking the Deacs on a 3-7 run from the beginning. Wake Forest attempted to come back, but with a kill by Mary Hock and a service ace by Emily Heckl increased Winthrop's lead to six. The Deacs were unable to come back from the deficit and Winthrop tied the match at two each.
The third was a fight for the lead, with the two teams tying the game eight times before senior Kim Stern came to the line at 11 all and dished out three consecutive aces. Gunning off the momentum, the Deacs kept the lead until the 17-17 mark when Winthrop tied it up again. Determined not to drop the game, junior Erin Borhart slammed down a kill and Stern followed with one of her own, leading the Deacs to a 30-26 victory. Wake Forest entered the fourth game fighting, tying it up 10 times, including at the 25-25 mark. A kill by the Eagles and a service ace at 25-28 pushed Winthrop ahead, eventually giving them the game, 30-28.
In the fifth and final game the Deacs jumped out to an early 3-1 lead but the Eagles were able to come back and tie it up with an ace at the 8-8 mark. Fighting for the victory, teams went point for point until Heckl came up and served for the final four points, taking the game and match, 15-11.
