Wake Forest Volleyball Defeats Maryland, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Erin Borhart posted her third triple-double of the season, leading the Wake Forest volleyball team to a 3-2 (25-30, 30-25, 17-30, 30-24, 15-12), victory over the University of Maryland, Friday night at the Comcast Center Pavilion. The win cracks a nine-game losing streak and marks the Demon Deacons first ACC victory this season.
The Deacs opened up the first game with Maryland taking a small lead at 3-1, but they were able to catch up and knot the score at 5-5 and again at the 6 point mark. At 6-6, the Terps took the Deacs on a eight point run, establishing a significant lead that Wake Forest was unable to catch up to. Despite a small three point run at 22-29, the Terps took the first game 30-25.
In the second game, the two teams kept it close for the first nine points, but at the 4-5 mark, the Deacs took the Terrapins on a 7-1 run, creating a lead that Maryland could not catch. Pushing on, Wake Forest took the Terps on a three-point run at 10-18 and a kill by Christy Williams and another by Lauren Peterson cushioned the lead at 17-26, eventually giving Wake game two, 30-25.
In the third game, Wake and Maryland tied the game four times until the Terps broke away and took the Deacs on an 8-2 run, ending at the 16-11 mark. Unable to recover from the run, Maryland continued to increase its lead, taking the third, 30-17.
In the fourth,both teams again came out fighting, tying the game 10 times until the 17-18 mark when the Deacs went on a five point run that was highlighted by two blocks by Borhart and Williams and a service ace by Klarysa Henry. Wake Forest maintained the lead and took the game 30-24.
In the fifth and final game, Wake jumped out to an early lead at 3-5, but the Terps were able to hang on catching up at 7-6. A kill by Valerie Rydberg and a bad set by Maryland secured the Deacs lead at 10-6. A Kill by Kim Stern ended the match at 15-12, giving the Deacs their first ACC victory of the season.
Borhart picked up her triple-double with 13 kills, 42 assists and 17 digs, in addition to three block assists. Rydberg picked up a double-double with 11 kills and a match-high 21 digs, while Williams posted the match high eight block assists.
The Deacs will continue in conference action tomorrow night against the University of Virginia. Match time in Charlottesville is set for 5 pm.
