Women's Tennis Finishes Strong At ITA Southeast Regional

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team competed in the 2004 ITA Southeast Regional October 21-25 at the Wake Forest University Indoor Tennis Center. Several players recorded positive results throughout the 27 team tournament.

In order to be entered into the main draw event, several players were required to win in the qualifying rounds for the tournament. Danielle Schwartz and Blakely Offutt both succeeded in these rounds on their way to the main draw. Schwartz defeated Martyna Hanusz of Liberty 6-2, 6-3 and then went on to beat Kirstin Buchanan of East Carolina 6-4, 7-5 for a position in the main draw. Offutt defeated Sallie Kiser of UNC Wilmington 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of qualifying event and then went on to down Kate Lacoste of UNC Greensboro 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Alisha Talbot of Wake Forest lost her first round qualifying match to Meggie Patterson of Davidson 6-2, 6-2.

In the singles main draw senior Karin Coetzee led the way for the Deacons as she cruised through to the singles finals. The 3rd seeded Coetzee knocked off Mariia Ilina of East Tennessee St. 6-1, 6-0, Tory Zawacki of Duke 6-0, 6-2, and reached the quarterfinals with a win over 6th seeded Sabita Maharaj of Tennessee Knoxville 6-2, 6-1. Coetzee defeated 5th seeded Sarah Foster of Kentucky to reach the semi finals and eventually beat 2nd seeded Aniela Mojzis of UNC Chapel Hill 6-4, 6-3. In the finals, Coetzee fell to number one seed Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Schwartz won her first round match in the main draw over Tricia Hanson of Western Carolina 6-3, 6-0, but fell in the round of 32 to 8th seeded Jenny Zika of Duke 6-1, 6-0. Katie Martzolf had a strong showing by reaching the round of 16 with victories over Elizabeth Whelpley of Austin Peay 6-0, 6-0 and Rachel Magory of College of Charleston 6-2, 6-3, however, eventually fell to Kim Coverntry of Kentucky 6-3, 6-2.

Offutt fell to 5th seeded Sarah Foster in the first round of the main draw singles event 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Jenna Loeb also participated in the tournament, but lost to 10th seeded Maria Brito of Clemson in the first round of main draw play.

Finally, in doubles play the team of Coetzee and Ashlee Davis had a first round bye and went on to beat the team of Hanson/Ptak of Western Carolina 8-6. Coetzee and Davis reached the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over Anundsen/Long of UNC Chapel Hill before falling to 3rd seeded Alverez/Brito of Clemson.

Offutt and Schwartz teamed up to win their first round doubles match over Adams/Wilson of Tennessee Chatanooga 8-2. They went on in the next round to fall to 6th seeded Coin/Lacelarie of Clemson 8-3. Loeb and Martzolf of Wake Forest received a first round bye and then went on in the next round to defeat Novaes/Simanca of Winthrop 8-4. They were eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16 by 8th seeded Coverntry/Schwenk of Kentucky 8-1.

The next women's tennis event is the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan November 4th and 5th.
