
Women's Basketball Wins Thriller Over Davidson, 58-55

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore Porsche' Jones scored a career-high 25 points, including the game winner as the Demon Deacons (4-0) edged the Davidson Wildcats (3-3) in a thrilling 58-55 victory. The win gave the Deacons their best opening record since 1988, where they opened the year 4-0 as well.s North Carolina A&T, Thursday at the Joel Coliseum. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
"I'm very proud of our effort tonight," Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen said. "That was a courageous effort by Porsche'. When we were making a comeback, she made some great plays down the stretch."
Wake Forest jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a 3-pointer by Cotelia Bond-Young and jumper by Jones, but Katie Hamilton answered quickly for the Wildcats putting them on the board with a 3-pointer. Exchanging the next few points, the Deacs maintained their lead, despite a four point run by Davidson. Wake eventually pulled ahead with a nine point run that gave them a 13 point lead at 24-11. As the half winded down, Wake continued to jump forward, finding 10 more and closing the half, 34-18.
In the opening 20 minutes, the Deacs scored 14 points in transition, forcing nine turnovers, but as the second half started, the Wildcats came out of the locker room fighting. Chipping away at the lead, Davidson took Wake on a 12-4 run that was finally ended at 38-30 with a 3-pointer and then a jumper by Jones.
The points by the Jones served to be the last for over six minutes as the Wildcats went on another long run that eventually knotted the score at 43 all. With less than six minutes to play, a pair of 3-pointers by Emily Callahan left Wake fighting to regain the lead. The Wildcats pushed ahead by five, but a pair from the line by Jones brought kept Wake in the hunt. Refusing to give up, a fast break with a lay-up by Bond-Young and another two from Jones with less than two minutes left brought the game within one. Winning a jump ball with 36 seconds left, the Deacs brought it down the floor trailing by one and Jones drilled a three-pointer that gave the Deacs the lead for good. Jones added a free throw with one second left to give the Deacons a 58-55 victory over the Wildcats.
For Davidson, Hamilton put up 12 points, while Callahan was not far behind with 10. As a team, the Wildcats shot 48.0% in the second half, en route to 31.1% overall.
As a team, the Deacs found 22 points in the paint, despite shooting a 33.9%. Senior Erin Ferrell pulled down 11 boards, seven of which were defensive, while sophomore Maya Bennett notched a career-high eight rebounds. Jennifer Johnson also had a strong night, pulling down nine boards while adding seven points.
