Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team traveled to Chapel Hill November 5-7 for the first annual UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational. The preseason tournament was held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and featured eight of the top women's tennis programs in the country. Wake Forest provided a strong showing in both singles and doubles.

The Demon Deacons took on Miami in the first match of the tournament winning two of the four singles matches played. Ashlee Davis defeated Staci Stevens 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) at the number one spot while Katie Martolf fell to Mel Applebaum 6-2, 6-1 at the number two position. Danielle Schwartz lost to Miami's Emily Mowery 6-1, 7-6(4), 1-0 (10-5), while Blakely Offutt of Wake Forest defeated Caren Seenauth 6-4, 6-4.

The Deacons then took on Virginia Tech on the same day of play dropping four of the six singles played. Martzolf fell to Anat Elazari 4-6, 2-6 while Davis dropped her match at the number two spot to J.J. Larson 4-6, 5-7. Schwartz won her first match of the tournament with a tough victory over Felice Lam 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2). Offutt dropped a tough match to Ashley James 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) while Jenna Loeb fell to Jessica Long of Virginia Tech 7-5, 6-4. Talbot capped off the match against Virginia Tech with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bethan James.

On day two of the tournament, Wake Forest came out strong taking five of the six singles matches from Minnesota. Davis defeated Nischela Reddy 7-5, 6-2, Martzolf had a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jane Anderson, and Schwartz fell to Ida Malmberg 6-2, 6-1. In positions four through six Offutt defeated Marina Bugaenco 6-2, 6-2, Loeb beat Danielle Mousseau 6-4, 2-6, (10-7), and Talbot knocked off Minnesota's Megan Steiger 6-1, 6-0.

The Deacons finished their singles competition on day three of the tournament against Duke. Davis fell to Jackie Carleton 6-4, 6-3, Martzolf dropped her match to Kaite Blaszak 7-5, 6-2, and Schwartz lost to Kristin Cargill 6-2, 6-2. In singles spots four through six Offutt fell to Sarab Arasu 6-3, 6-4, Loeb lost to Clelia Deltour 6-1, 6-1, and Talbot fell to Tori Zawacki 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles play, the Deacons dropped three matches to the Blue Devils. The team of Martzolf and Schwartz dropped a tight match to Zika/Cargill 8-5. Davis and Loeb fell to Zawacki/Carleton 8-3 and the third doubles team lost yet another close match to Blaszak/Arasu 8-5.

On day two of doubles play Wake Forest took on Winthrop, winning two of the three matches. Martzolf and Schwartz defeated Novaes/Simanca 8-4 while Davis/Loeb beat Caceres/Takahashi 8-3. Offutt and Talbot fell to Moita/Bekmetova 8-5. Also on day two, Wake Forest took on Washington State winning the two doubles matches played. Martzolf and Schwartz defeated Sallai/Martinez 8-4, while Davis and Loeb beat Toth/Gaal 8-4.

On the final day of doubles play, the Demon Deacons took on the host team UNC-Chapel Hill. Wake Forest took two of three doubles matches. Martzolf and Schwartz defeated Anundsen/Long 8-6 while Offutt and Talbot won at the number three spot over Juravitz/Tansill 9-8 (2). Davis and Loeb fell at number two to Cline/Collins of UNC 8-1.

The Kitty Harrison Invitational was the women's tennis team's final fall tournament of the year. The Deacons first match of the spring season will be played on January 22 against Charlotte at 11:00a.m.
