LEXINGTON, Ky. - Junior Cotelia Bond-Young had a tremendous second-half, sinking five straight three pointers, helping the Wake Forest women's basketball team overcome an eight point first half deficit, but the Kentucky Wildcats pulled out a 66-61 victory, Thursday night in Rupp Arena.
Bond-Young, who put up the team-high 18 points, shot 6-10 from beyond the arc, while junior Liz Strunk added 11 points and was just one board away from a double-double, with nine total. As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 95 percent from the line, only missing one free throw.
Wake struggled in the beginning of the game with Kentucky jumping out to an early 9-0 lead. Finally knocking it in, Strunk lead the Deacs on a 7-0 run, but unfortunately it was followed by an 11 point Wildcat run that put Kentucky up ahead 21-7. Getting in the game, Wake sunk three consecutive baskets from beyond the arc, including one from Bond-Young, and then 10 in a row from the line, that eventually put the Deacs into the break trailing by eight.
In the second, Bond-Young was on fire, sinking five straight, leading her to a career-high six from beyond the arc.Tying the game at 56 all, the remainder of the points that Kentucky would get in the game came from the line, where they hit 13-13. As the clock ran down, senior Meredith Bell hit a three-pointer for the Demon Deacons with 10 seconds remaining but Danyelle Payne's two free throws gave the Cats the 66-61 victory.
Sarah Elliot had the game high 20 points for the Cats and Sarah Potts added 15 points, along with three assists and six rebounds.
Wake Forest will open both the new year and the ACC season on Jan. 3 against NC State. The game, which will be televised on FSN, will take place in Reynolds Coliseum at 6 p.m.
