WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball limited their opponent to just 13 points in the second half as the Demon Deacons (6-0) downed Providence College (0-6) by a score of 78-44. The victory for the Demon Deacons is the sixth straight and gives the team their best season opening record since the 1987-88 season.

Redshirt-sophomore Porsche' Jones led the Deacs with 16 points to lead five Demon Deacon double digit scorers. The Winston-Salem native also tallied a career high eight assists. Junior Cotelia Bond-Young added 14, junior Liz Strunk scored 13 with five rebounds, senior Jennifer Johnson scored 12, and senior Erin Ferrell chipped in 11 points.

The Deacons shot 46.3% from the field and 44.8% from three while limiting the Friars to 33.3% shooting. The Deacons forced 24 turnovers and recorded 12 steals.

The Friars opened up the first half jumping out to a quick 4-10 lead, but a a three pointer by Bond Young and another by Jones knotted the game at 12 each. A stolen pass by Ferrell resulted in another from outside the arc by Bond-Young and pushing Wake Forest into the lead. Fighting back, the Friars went on a 7-3 run that resulted in another lead change at 27-25. Unfortunately for the Friars, another set of three's by Bond-Young and Jones gave Wake the lead again. Providence was able to tie the score at 31 all with a little less than four minutes remaining, but from that point, the Demon Deacons held them off and take them on a 15-0 run, giving Wake a 46-31 lead at the half.

Strunk came out of the locker room for the second half and set the tone for the Deacs by sinking a three for Wake Forest. Moments later, Bond-Young matched her teammates points and increased Wake's run to 21 with a three-pointer of her own. The Deacons outscored the Friars 32-13 in the second half and stepped up the defensive intensity allowing the Friars to score just three baskets on 22 shots.

For the Friars, Shauna Snyder scored the game-high 27 points, shooting 9-20 from the field, while Kristina Baugh chipped in seven points.

With the win, the Deacs close out a five-game home stand and will next travel to Greenville, N.C. to face the East Carolina Pirates on Sunday, Dec. 12. Against the C-USA opponents, the Demon Deacs will look for their first victory since the 1996-97 season. Game time in Greenville, N.C. is set for 4 p.m.
